Accessibility Films and Policy

Accessible films

We believe that short films are for everyone. This year, thanks to some funding from the Ministry of Culture and Heritage and Able, we have had captions and audio descriptions made for the films in our Aotearoa te Ōhākī section.

In this collection of short films you'll discover the rising talents of new and established directors from Aotearoa New Zealand. The films are loosely themed around the Te Ao Māori concept of Te Ōhākī - meaning cultural and identity reclamation. Find here stories of people from many different cultures who are feeling displaced or disconnected, and seeking their place in the world. Be that place the family home, out on the streets, inside a quarantine facility or astride a stage for drag queens.

These films are available to watch anywhere in New Zealand via our On Demand platform. There is also a special captioned screening in Christchurch of Aotearoa te Ōhākī at Alice Cinemas on Saturday 21 October at 10:10 am. Here is the link to the Alice ticketing site: https://ticketing.oz.veezi.com/purchase/29047?siteToken=pv7xxq106ghrdhj41qqmzx80e4

You can find Aotearoa te Ōhākī, with captions, On Demand here: https://ondemand.showmeshorts.co.nz/bundle/aotearoa-te-ohaki/. Note, the captions can be turned on or off. Many of the other films available On Demand also have captions, as indicated in the individual film listings. Some of the films in the Whānau Friendly 2 collection On Demand have no dialogue so are suitable for younger viewers with hearing difficulties.

You can find Aotearoa te Ōhākī, with audio descriptions, On Demand here: https://ondemand.showmeshorts.co.nz/bundle/aotearoa-te-ohaki-audio-description/

There are two bonus kiwi films particularly well suited to audio descriptions included in this bundle.

Known issues

Our website is rich with dynamic content that unfortunately is not very compatible with screen readers. Likewise, the filtering tools for searching films and screening information is optimised for mouse use and is not user-friendly for keyboard navigation. We are working on coding improvements to these features but are unlikely to have them all fixed in time for use at the 2023 festival.

Provide feedback

We welcome your feedback on the accessibility of the Show Me Shorts website. If you have experienced any accessibility barriers while using any part of showmeshorts.co.nz, please let us know:
